Di's Fitness Journal: Week #6
I’m “Winning” Not “Not Losing”
Starting Weight: 195
Current Weight: 183
Goal Weight: 165
Did you know there’s a difference between “winning” and “not losing”? Have you ever been to a sport’s game where the team has a considerable lead and so they start to get comfortable? They bench their best players and just run the clock until the end of the game? Whether they win or lose, those aren’t the games worth playing.
Sometimes, I feel like I can get like that when I am moving toward reaching my goals. It’s been six weeks since I started this fitness journey to lose my baby weight (and then some.) And, sometimes instead of thinking “what are the very best foods I could give myself today to keep myself fueled for the busy day ahead?” Or, “how far can I push myself in this work out?” I think, “a few extra calories in this snack won’t hurt.” Or, “I could probably skip this work out today and meet the minimum goal I have for the week.”
What Motivates You?
If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you know your motivation comes in surges.
You don’t always feel like getting up in the morning, you don’t always feel like pushing it your hardest when you’re working out. You don’t always want to eat a carrot instead of an ice cream sandwich. I’m ten pounds in to my weight loss, and I am starting to feel like I need another wave of inspiration. I know I have to really ride the waves of momentum when I’m feeling them to get back into shape. And, when I’m not feeling very motivated, I have to think about what motivates me to keep me on track.
I know one thing that really makes me feel motivated is reading about health and fitness through books and magazines. Though I’m careful not to follow every little tidbit of conflicting advice I read. I know that I will have the opportunity to reflect on my goals when I read the articles of other people as they work toward their health and fitness goals.
Have You Had the Talk?
For me, with a family of six, I cannot reach my fitness goals without the support of my husband. Each morning when I wake up to leave my house for a 6am workout, he may or may not have to comfort our crying newborn baby. In order for me to get all the kids out the door for school drop offs, he has to get ready for work and get breakfast started for them before I return from my workout. On the weekends, in order for each of us to get a workout in, we both have to wake up fairly early rather than trade off getting a little extra sleep (which, with a newborn, we desperately need.)

Love Not Hate Will Get You to Your Goal Weight
Starting Weight: 195
Current Weight: 185
Goal Weight: 165
This past week, for whatever reason, emotions were running high. I could sense that now that some of the pounds have come off- it’s time to get serious about reflecting on why they got there in the first place. I so desperately want to break be under 180, and yet I can feel myself being drawn to bad choices. Why is that when I am getting closer to reaching my goals?

In Sickness and In Health
Taking Care of Yourself Is A Commitment
This week, I got terribly sick. Usually, all bets are off when I'm sick. I eat what I want because I don't feel good and I just want comfort. But, not this week! I ended up having to sit out my Friday and Saturday workouts and opt for exercise (hello, walking.) But, I was really committed to tracking my calories and (see my article You Get What You Need) actually listening to what my body needed: rest, hydration, and good nutritious food to recover from being sick.
